INTO AFRICA. Wernsbach

Virginia Mukwesha & Leonard Zhakata-Zombi

Zombi means “Zora Meets Mbira”. It is the acoustic brainchild of Virginia Mukwesha and Leonard Zhakata who both admire each other’s artistic work so much that sooner or later they had to meet in order to create their Zombi. In contrast to the black image of the zombie from voodoo, this Zombi is full of white magic because of the congenial fusion of the two magical sounds: the Zora sounds of Zhakata and the modern-traditional sounds of Virginia Mukwesha.

“ZORA” is the trademark of Leonard Zhakata and means “Zhakata Original Rhythms of Africa” whereas mbira is the rhythm and cultural background of Virginia Mukwesha’s music which can be described best as “Presence
of the Past for the Future”. Zombi is the combination of both.

Zombi marks a point in the musical history of Zimbabwe: it is a real fusion of the two beats of mbira and sungura.

Song Explanations

01 Kere
It is a woman who makes a home comfortable. A strong woman must be in a position to talk about whatever is disturbing her other than just fuming. Sometimes it just helps to give lots of positive energy than to fight negativity with negative energy. The result is NEGATIVE. To be permanently in a bad mood does not solve any problems. Love and marriage are like horse and carriage. One can’t go without the other.

02 Mhamba (Alcohol)
Brother Samson, please stop drinking! Your alcohol consumption is getting out of control. Each time you drink you loose your head. You disrespect our parents to the extent of beating mum. Don’t you know that a MOTHER IS SACRED?

03 Nzira (Ways)
I’ve ripped what I sew. I thought I was having a bit of fun fooling around but now I’am suffering. Please forgive me!

04 Dambura Mbabvu
Subjects of the same kingdom Sharing the same ideas Those ideas falling on hollow ears. I wonder what happened to our unity. We fought to build a nation Working together as one. United we stood and divided as we are today we have fallen.

05 Dairai
This song is dedicated to all women who don’t have the courage to say: No, not with me darling…
We are both breadwinners. But after work you put your legs up and ask me to be your servant. Am I a robot?

06 Muvhimi Ndini (The Hunter)
I am the Breadwinner. Respect and appreciate the little I manage to bring home. Now the world has become so hostile because of the financial crisis. It’s now survival of the fittest.

07 Mukuwasha (Son in Law)
You no longer show respect. What has transpired? It’s such a pity that we get influenced and get carried away by customs which are not our own.

08 Chitubu (The Fountain Of Love)
You remember how you used to get irritated through my efforts to get you. I just wanted you babe. Look at you now splashing in my fountain. The fountain of love. Be grateful then I only live to make you happy.

09 Mwenza (Lifepath)
Let me warn you my dear child! Listen carefully: The path of life is full of hindrances. What you need is to make a wise choice. There are too many pitfalls on this hard road to travel. However one must keep trying in spite of those obstacles.

10 Nterere
How many women do you want to end up with? You think you can have them all? It’s just a wish like women would want to own all the clothes of the world. Remember men always want to, but can not always, and women can always, but don’t always want to. What you’re trying to do is mission impossible. At the end of the day it’s only Aids that you can reap.
